Ecotopia 'Migration Focus Days' (10-11-12 August 2007)

People have always migrated in search of better economical, ecological, social living conditions.. Today, for many people migration becomes not a choice, but a necessity since the economic model we live in increases the inequalities between regions, and puts the social and environmental conditions of many people under risk.
Migration is becoming (has already become!) more and more a sensitive subject and the themes such as refugees, borders, illegality, cheap labour, rural exodus, desertification, racism and many others become more and more relevant subjects as they effect and include everyone's daily life.

We would like to focus on this year’s Ecotopia on the theme of human migrations reflecting on its causes, effects and reactions it has within the society and the government policies, from different perspectives such as:

• Environmental justice and the environmental displacements caused by human reasons such as deforestation, desertification and drought, plantations (eucalyptus, agrofuels, carbon sinks) and climate change;
• Social justice, addressing themes such as discrimination and illegality, and realizing contradictions such as globalization Vs unauthorized migration and “good emigrant” (socially accepted, tourist from rich countries) Vs “bad emigrant” (that suffers discrimination, from poor countries).
• Reflection on the influence of the neoliberalist economic globalization on both cases above.

You are more than welcome to organize a workshop, discussion, present your group, mobilize people for your campaign, projects during Migration Focus Days (10-11-12 August 2007) in Ecotopia.
